Making the Most of Your Time

Turin needs at least two or three days to visit properly. If you have extra time, visit one of the magnificent palaces built by the Savoy family. They surround Turin in the so-called corona di delizie (crown of delights) and make for an easy day trip.

Plan on several days to visit the Langhe and Monferrato areas. The towns of Alba and Asti should not be missed, but neither should the smaller wine towns that dot the rolling hills of both regions. You'll need your own car here, but the rewards are great views, great food, and great wine. If coming in September and October, when there are festivals in both Alba and Asti, make sure to book your trip well in advance.

Unless you are planning on a skiing or hiking holiday, the Valle d'Aosta requires less time to visit. The emphasis here is on the natural beauty of the mountains, but if you are driving between France and Italy, the region certainly merits a one- or two-night stopover, in either Courmayeur or Aosta; be sure not to miss Castello Fénis and the Forte di Bard on your way.
