Hiking

Valentia Island. Even in high summer, Valentia Island is a peaceful spot for walking, with little traffic. Walk the 3-km (2-mile) road from Knightstown to the historic Slate Quarry, 900 feet above the sea, with views of the Skellig Islands offshore. A signpost on the return journey will direct you to the lighthouse at Cromwell Point and more great sea views. A longer hike in this corner of the island will take you to the tetrapod trackway: footsteps left by dinosaurs some 350 million years ago. Hiking maps are freely available. Co.
