Getting Here and Around

Airport Transfers

The Reykjavík FlyBus leaves Keflavík (from directly outside the terminal building) and arrives in Reykjavík at the BSÍ bus terminal. Connections are provided from there to the larger hotels and guesthouses, or you can take a taxi to your final destination. FlyBuses are scheduled in connection with flight arrivals and departures. The FlyBus departs from BSÍ, with optional pickup from some hotels (listed on its website). The ride takes around 45 minutes, and the fare is ISK 1,950 per person one way (ISK 2,500 with hotel pick-up/drop-off) or ISK 3,500 round-trip (ISK 4,500 with hotel pick-up/drop-off).

A taxi from the Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík is a little faster than the FlyBus and costs ISK 10,500 during daytime and ISK 13,500 in the evenings for a smaller car. A large car, which seats five to eight passengers, costs ISK 13,500 during the day and ISK 17,800 at night. If you share it with others, you can split the cost. There are direct phones to taxi companies in the arrivals hall. From the Reykjavík Airport a taxi to your hotel costs around ISK 1,500. Municipal Bus 15 also stops in front of the main domestic terminal.

Bus Travel

The municipal bus service, affectionately nicknamed Stræto (pronounced stry-toe), provides extensive, cheap, and reliable service throughout Reykjavík and its surrounding municipalities. Buses are yellow, with an "s" logo on a red circular background, and run starting around 6:30 am, with last buses tending to depart around 11 pm. Express buses run every 15 minutes during peak times and every half hour during the evenings and weekends. Route booklets are available at the main terminals of Hlemmur, Mjódd, and Ártún, as well as at most tourist information centers. A new "Strætó bs" app is available from iTunes, offering mobile planners, payments, and real-time travel information. The flat fare within the sprawling capital area is ISK 400, payable to the driver in exact change on boarding. You can buy strips of tickets at a lower price from the driver or at the main terminals. The fare allows you to travel any distance in the metro area; depending on your destination, you may have to change buses. If so, ask for skiptimiða (skiff-teh-mee-tha), a transfer ticket that you give the second bus driver.

If you plan an extended stay in the Reykjavík area, it may be worthwhile to spend ISK 10,900 on the Green Card, a monthly pass valid on all routes. For shorter stays, a practical investment is the Reykjavík City Card, available from the Tourist Information Center, which permits unlimited bus usage and admission to any of the capital city's seven pools, the Family Park and Zoo, the ferry to Viðey Island, and city-run museums.

Taxi Travel

Most cabs are new, fully equipped passenger sedans. They have small "taxi" signs on top and can be hailed anywhere on the street; the "laus" sign indicates that the cab is available. There are taxi stands in a few locations around the city, but it is common to order a taxi by phone. Normally you have to wait only a few minutes. Most taxis accept major credit and debit cards. Fares are regulated by meter; rides around Reykjavík run between ISK 1,500 and ISK 4,500. There is no tipping.
