Fodor's Expert Review Hilton Budapest

Hess András tér 1–3, Budapest, Budapest, 1014, Hungary

A quick walk around the exterior of this hotel quickly betrays its mixed architectural origins—it was built in 1977 around the remains of a 13th-century Gothic chapel—but the modern and tasteful rooms, proximity to Matthias Church (right next door), and great views from Castle Hill will soothe the most delicate of aesthetic sensibilities. The hotel's LÁNG Bistro restaurant has gorgeous views of the Danube and Pest, while the atmospheric Faust Wine Cellar, deep in the caves below Castle Hill, offers a choice of fun and informative wine tastings.

PROS

  • dramatic river views
  • prime Castle Hill location
  • wine tastings in atmospheric medieval cellar

CONS

  • no pool and minimal fitness facilities
  • typical chain-hotel rooms
  • bizarre combo of Gothic stonework and 1970s tinted gold windows
