Fodor's Expert Review Kalaitzis Estate

Metochi, Vergina, Central Macedonia, 59031, Greece Fodor's Choice

Though not within Vergina itself, this countryside retreat is well worth the effort to reach and is especially delightful in the snow-covered winter months because of its plush, cozy, and sumptuous decor. Stout brown-leather sofas, sculpted wood features, stone walls, fluffy bedding provide comfort, while windows look out to glorious natural scenes—a vineyard, a lake, a garden, and a pretty village—thanks to its hilltop position. Efficiently and lovingly run by a wine-making family, the boutique hotel also serves stylish and delicious Greek, Mediterranean, and European food that is suitable even to those with the most challenging of dietary needs (vegan, gluten-free, halal, kosher, etc). The bedrooms offer a soothing old-world elegance combined with contemporary chic (think 18th-century style brass taps in a bathroom with chromotherapy lights).
