To get to Skiathos and Skopelos by car, you must drive to the port of Agios Konstantinos (Agios), and from there, take the ferry. The drive to Agios from Athens takes about two hours. For high-season travel you should reserve a place on the car ferry well in advance. Boats for Skyros leave from the port of Kimi on the big island of Evia. From Athens, take Athens–Lamia National Road to Skala Oropou, and make the 30-minute ferry crossing to Eretria on Evia (every half hour in the daytime). No reservations are needed. You can drive directly to Evia over a short land bridge connecting Agios Minas on the mainland with Halkidha, about 80 km (50 miles) from Athens (take National Road 1 to the Schimatari exit, and then follow the signs to Halkidha). From Halkidha it's another 80 km (50 miles) to Kimi; total driving time from Athens is about 2½ hours, but on weekends crowds can slow traffic across the bridge.

The best way to get around the islands is by renting a car, but in the busy summer months, parking can be hard to come by in the main towns and villages. Car rentals cost €30–€70 per day, while scooters cost €14–€30 (with insurance). Scooters are ubiquitous, but if you rent a scooter, be extra cautious: scooter accidents provide the island clinics with 80% of their summer business.
