Adamas, also known as Adamantas—diamond in Greek—is one of the largest natural harbors in the Aegean but remained a sleepy hamlet until it was populated by refugees from a failed rebellion in Crete in the 1820s. It lacks a well-defined historical center but the marble paved promenade is a pleasant place to stroll of an evening, and restaurants, cafés, and shops congregate at the junction of the Plaka road.
The beaches around Adamas are perfectly serviceable with Lagada to the east and Papikinou to the west—both reachable on foot. However, on an island with such a variety of coastline it pays to explore.
