Fodor's Expert Review Athens Was

Dionissiou Aeropagitou 5, Athens, Attica, 11742, Greece

Athens's first lustrous and refreshingly modern design hotel is only minutes from the Acropolis and its museum, and since the hotel opened in 2015 its rooftop café-restaurant has been a hot spot for locals and others looking for a drink or meal with a view. With gleaming, Escheresque marble floors juxtaposed with black-and-white photos of classical statues and elegant retro-chic furnishings from the 1920s (by Le Corbusier, Eileen Gray) and 1960s (by Warren Platner), the hotel represents the capital's invigorating new attitude—one of assertive contemporary style and luxurious quality that doesn't disregard the vast charm of the past. Only the superdeluxe rooms overlook the Parthenon, but all rooms have soft, comfortable beds, hip decor, spacious marble bathrooms, access to a pillow menu, and free Wi-Fi.

PROS

  • excellent location near the Acropolis
  • modern bathrooms with a lot of perks
  • fantastic views from rooftop café-restaurant

CONS

  • passersby on the pedestrian street below can be noisy
