Fodor's Expert Review Amalia Hotel

Amalias 10, Athens, Attica, 10557, Greece See on Map

Natasha Giannousi-Varney

Clean, central and functional. With a location right on one of Athens's biggest, busiest streets, directly across from Parliament (the ex Royal palace), Amalia Hotel, member of one of the oldest hotel chains in Greece, offers professional service, modern layout and an impeccable location combined with a no-frills and hassle-free approach to hospitality.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Double-glazed windows keep the noise firmly outside while the pretty National Garden (commissioned by Queen Amalia of Greece in 1838) just across the street is a peaceful oasis.

Standard rooms are simple, modern and spotlessly clean, with big beds and comfortable mattresses. Free wifi everywhere. Most of them are generously sized, while suites offer an additional living space.

The rooms at the back of the hotel may have no views, but no noise either if you want to leave windows open at night.

Clean and modern, with plenty of shelf space for the quality British toiletries Gilchrist and Soames.

The lobby is not going to win any top marks for break-through design but it is functional and modern, although on the smallish side.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The Chrysalis lounge serves snacks and some of the coldest draught beer in town. There is also a small business center.

The rich buffet breakfast is served on the Mezzanine level with plenty of choices to satisfy any dietary restrictions.

The Chrysalis Lounge in the lobby is really the place to go for a refreshing drink. The rooftop views are spectacular but there is not a bar or café so bring your own.

Getting Around

The hotel is very close to transportation. The airport shuttle is next door, the metro and tram are just a few steps away (Syntagma square). The hop on hop off bus that tours Athens is just across the road. Many Athens tour buses stop right in front of the hotel as part of their daily tours. It is also very easy to flag down a taxi, or the reception desk can book one for you. Parking is at an extra cost.

The neighborhood of Plaka (10 minutes away) with its quaint tavernas and open-air cafes is a very short walk away and offers a plethora of choices. A bit closer, Avocado restaurant (5 minutes away) is a popular vegetarian option that gets top marks by meat lovers alike (5 minutes away), while O Tzitzikas kai o Mermigkas (10 minutes away) offers delicious salads and a representative sample of New Greek cuisine. If you prefer sushi, Koi Sushi Bar (5 minutes away) is a good find.

Walk down to Vrettos on Plaka’s main axis Kydathinaion str. (15-minute walk) and experience the mystic atmosphere of its backlit bottles and home-made liqueurs. The Warehouse CO2 Project (5-minute walk) serves over 100 different wine labels to taste and more than 300 different wines to take away with you, as well as specialty coffee blends. Oinoscent (10-minute walk) is another excellent choice for wine lovers who want to discover local varieties.

Perfectly located with modern, clean rooms and helpful staff, this hotel deals with visitors in a professional manner and offers a rich breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and conference facilities. Not many other amenities are provided, but what Hotel Amalia does offer is consistently up to a high standard.
