Why We Like It

The hotel is a beautifully restored old Athenian building and as such has heaps of character. The staff is friendly and helpful and, of course, location matters especially if you like to go everywhere by foot--for some, the best way to explore a city. Its neoclassical beauty does come at a bit of a cost, all things considered.

Fodor's Expert Review

Set centrally but on noisy Sygrou Avenue, the beautifully restored late 19th-century neoclassical building has been transformed into a respectable little boutique hotel. Gold painted gaudy antique furniture sits quite comfortably in high-ceilinged rooms, a mark of the architecture of the time. The location, though not Athens' most beautiful, is prime for visiting the city’s top attractions old and new as everything is ramblingly close.

Room

The 22 well-appointed rooms range from small doubles to larger family sized rooms with a laddered mezzanine bed space for the kids. The beds have comfortable Cocomat eco mattresses and the rooms are finished with wood antiques. A complimentary bottle of water will be left daily in your room.

You Should Know Rooms opening onto the busy avenue do get affected by some street noise.

Bathroom

The bathrooms are small but practical, with shower cubicles. Some of the towels are a little worn around the edges--a little bit like some parts of the hotel.

Lobby

Marble and wooden floors decked with Persian-style carpets, antique furnishings, and golden framed mirrors and paintings add character to the ground floor lobby and adjoining areas. It makes for a lovely change to the cement and steel that confronts travelers on the Athenian roads just outside.

Dining

The only food served at this lodging is breakfast. The buffet runs from 7-10 a.m., is fairly standard fare and though nothing too exciting to write home about, it will set you up nicely for the day. The dining area in the basement is not only on the small side, it’s also not in keeping really with the style of the rest of the hotel.

You Should Know There is fresh orange juice which you have to squeeze yourself.

Drinking

The hotel doesn’t have an actual hotel bar and serves coffee and soft drinks during breakfast time only, but with so many great bars on your doorstep, it’s not something you'll ever miss here.

O Psaras (15-minute walk) on a mazy Plaka side street is a go-to for Greeks and tourists alike, with renowned traditional Greek food. Fancy a snack? Bars

If you like your wine, try Winepoint (5-minute walk) with its excellent selection of top Greek wines and some fine nibbles too. Across from the Acropolis Museum is Old School (10-minute walk), a great spot to enjoy a beer or whiskey.
