The hotel, about an hour out of Munich, is gorgeously situated with a long lakefront that turns into a huge beer garden in summer. Guest rooms are full of light, and for a slightly higher price, you can stay in one with a balcony overlooking the lake. The restaurant serves resolutely Bavarian food and the whole set-up, in fact, delivers on all the German charm you might be looking for from this quaint property at the foothills of the Bavarian Alps.
Don't miss the traditional folk music performances on the hotel stage of an evening. We told you it delivers on Bavarian charm.
room
Rooms are fairly basic and a a little old-fashioned, with traditionally patterned curtains and even headboards, but generally comfortable enough. All superior rooms have waterbeds, which is an unusual touch.
YOU SHOULD KNOW While lakeside rooms are tranquil, rooms at the back of the hotel back onto a busy street with early-morning visits from loud delivery trucks.
bathroom
Bathrooms come with showers, and are also a little on the tired side, but clean.
lobby
The hotel's traditional lobby hosts its friendly staff.
YOU SHOULD KNOW WiFi can be slow.
pool
Join the outdoorsy Germans and swim in the lake (or sail, or go hiking, biking, climbing, etc).
dining
Dine in hearty all-out Bavarian style at the hotel's restaurant, with tasty pretzel soup, suckling pig, dumplings with sauerkraut, and fish, fresh from the lake, of course. Breakfast is good too.
drinking
What a hotel bar: a gorgeous beer garden perched on the lake, perfect for summer sunsets. A treat.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The hotel is well-situated for sightseeing in wider Bavaria, and gorgeously located by the lake, the sixth largest in Germany. It's an hour or so from Munich.
Restaurants
Seaside sushi & sake (6-minute walk) isn't exactly telling the truth about its location (it's in the town), but it offers great Japanese food nonetheless. Or Romantik Hotel Chalet am Kiental (8-minute walk) has fancy but pricey dining in a hotel restaurant.
WHY WE LIKE IT
A good base for exploring Bavaria further, this cute little hotel makes the most of its lakefront location and bar. It isn't super luxurious, but it's friendly and cozy, and that's what counts after a day of hearty hiking and exploring.
