Mandarin Oriental, Munich

Neuturmstrasse 1, Munich, Bavaria, 80331, Germany, Munich, Germany

Why We Like It

A top-of-the-range small luxury hotel that comes, unsurprisingly, at a top-of-the-range price. But you get what you pay for, from the rooftop pool to the large cozy beds.

Fodor's Expert Review

A super plush hotel right in the Old Town, this Mandarin Oriental is perhaps not the brand's most unique property worldwide but it delivers on all the luxury and swankiness you would expect: a gorgeous rooftop pool, super-comfortable rooms and fantastic service.

You Should Know The hotel is due for some renovations - new rooms and a new spa and pool. We're sure that the team will ensure that guests aren't disturbed, but it is worth checking in before you go.

Room

The large rooms come in a variety of categories, and display a mixture of Munich style - some even have views over the Hofbräuhaus (don't worry, the soundproofing means the revellers won't bother you) - and the Asian influences the high-end chain is known for, with Oriental rugs, Japanese artwork and cherry wood furnishings. The mini-bar is included in the room rate.

Tip Some rooms have high ceilings, a hint at the hotel's past. In the 1970s, it was a theatre, and the rooms with the loftiest canopies were reserved for dancing.

Bathroom

Bathrooms have baths and showers and come in swanky cream and black marble.

Lobby

The white and gold reception area, with the black marble-topped reception desk, is as fancy as you like, with an attractive curving staircase. Staff are at the top of their game.

Pool

A rarity in Munich: a gorgeous rooftop outfoor pool that's heated for the summertime is soon to be joined by a large indoor pool in a big draw for swimming fans.

Spa

The hotel's small sauna and steam bath is located in the fitness center, but a larger spa is planned in the upcoming renovations, too.

Gym

The hotel has a small ground floor fitness room.

Dining

Sleek, dark and ornate Matsuhisa restaurant blends Japanese and Peruvian food to stunning effect. Guests can also take afternoon tea in the refined lounge area or head out onto the gorgeous rooftop terrace for meals or drinks.

Drinking

Ory bar, with its shining orange-gold bar and velvet and leather chairs, is an upscale but relaxing place for a drink.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is nestled on the English Garden-side of Aldstadt, which means many of Munich's finest sights are just steps away. Public transport is close too.

Restaurants

The hotel suggests guests try high-end and highly rated vegetarian food at Tian (7-minute walk). Or Dallmayr (5-minute walk) has it all - a deli, cafe and fantastic two Michelin-starred restaurant.

Bars

It would be rude to stay this close to the famous, albeit touristy Hofbräuhaus (2-minute walk) and not visit the beerhall for at least one. For cocktails in a relaxed, refined atmosphere, though, head for Garçon (8-minute walk).
