Fodor's Expert Review Jagdschloss

Alte Allee 21, Munich, Bavaria, 81245, Germany See on Map

This century-old hunting lodge in Munich's leafy Obermenzing suburb is a delightful, if a little unusual, hotel. The rustic look has been retained, with lots of original woodwork and white stucco. Many of the comfortable bedrooms have wooden balconies with flower boxes bursting with color. In the beamed restaurant or sheltered beer garden you'll be served Bavarian specialties by a staff dressed in traditional lederhosen (shorts in summer, breeches in winter). The downside? It's decidedly not in the city center.

The historic lodge is a protected building thanks to its heritage and good looks.

room

The room decor continues the hunting theme, with tartan carpets, huge animal images, and calf-skin covered pouffes - perhaps a little much if it's not your thing! All are quiet and comfortable, though.

bathroom

Bathrooms are reasonably sized and modern, with some wooden cabinets and detail.

lobby

The welcome at reception can be a bit mixed - a little attempt at speaking German can go a long way.

dining

The restaurant here is one of the hotel's selling points, offering hearty German fare. Breakfast is not bad either.

drinking

The hotel itself has 'Wirtshaus' in its name and description, which means tavern, so unsurprisingly its on-site bar is great, serving tasty beer and with a lively beer garden in summer.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Overall, it's worth noting that the countryside-y feel you get from this lodge comes at the expense of being central or close to the city's key attractions.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The lodge is about ten minutes' walk from München-Pasing S-bahn station, which takes you into the city center in roughly 15 minutes. The airport is an hour or so away.

Restaurants

Essence (13-minute walk, by the station) is a surprisingly good neighborhood restaurant offering fine dining in chic surroundings. Or head to Cantina in der Pasinger Fabrik OHG (11-minute walk), the cool restaurant inside the cultural center now housed in the old factory. The industrial-vibe beer garden's not bad either.

Bars

Make the trip into town for the legendary beer-pub, Augustiner Keller (26-minute train and walk). Or closer to home, Nachtcafe (16-minute walk, close to the station) is a late-night live music spot that's usually packed with an eclectic crowd.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Staying in a bona fide German hunting lodge with a lively beer garden and staff in lederhosen? Great. The only downside is that it's a fair trip from the center of town, but for guests heading out of Munich or who want a quieter or more neighborhood vibe, that might be the attraction.
