Why We Like It

It can be a bit pricey, but it's a great location, with quiet, calming rooms and a great restaurant and bar in Vinothek. Get past the odd lobby and Hotel Excelsior is a great base for sightseeing in central Munich.

Fodor's Expert Review

Just a short walk along an underpass from the Hauptbahnhof station, the Excelsior's smart front entrance welcomes you with a slightly odd lobby, complete with a kitsch trompe l'oeil-style painted curtain around the ceiling, and a vague sense that it can't quite decide how fancy to be (prices, which can be on the high side, suggest that this decision has been made, at least in some areas). Look past this slightly odd opener, though, and rooms are spacious and inviting, and the hotel restaurant is cozy, with tasty meals.

Room

Rooms are large and mainly in beige, with comfortable king-size beds. Some overlook the courtyard, some the street, and some have pleasant tree-top views.

You Should Know There are no tea and coffee-making facilities in the rooms, although staff will bring a kettle.

Bathroom

The beige theme continues in the bathrooms, some of which have baths and some showers. The hotel has its own rosemary and thyme toiletries.

Lobby

We're not sold on the lobby's faux-old vibe, although its high ceilings and plush armchairs do make it feel comfortable if you can get past the slightly odd decorative choices.

Dining

The Vinothek restaurant has excellent food and an attractive buttress-style ceiling. Breakfast - a buffet, with eggs to order - is not always included in the room rate. There's a coffee shop nearby if that doesn't appeal.

Drinking

Vinothek, as you'd guess from the name, also has an excellent wine list.

Tip Try the Deutscher Sekt - German champagne.

Pageou (14-minute walk) is a beautiful restaurant on a beautiful Munich street, with a good business lunch. Or go traditionally hearty Bavarian and see quite how much schnitzel you can manage at Andy's Krablergarten (15-minute walk).
