Fodor's Expert Review Cortiina

Ledererstr. 8, Munich, Bavaria, 80331, Germany See on Map

One of Munich's best design hotels, Cortiina follows the minimalist gospel and belts out a really rather nice tune. Lots of sleek furniture and yellow and green tones abound and make for a welcoming take on modernism. Plus, comfort isn't sacrificed for style. The bar and restaurant are suitably hip, too, and the location is top--a breath of fresh, cool air in the middle of the Old Town.

For guests, the emphasis is on subtle luxury—fresh flowers, mattresses made from natural rubber, sheets made of untreated cotton. The large, light rooms have lovely leaf wallpapers, and come with all the amenities (even Bose speakers). In the annex, 54 yards away, are 30 apartments with cooking facilities, only adding to the feel that you're staying at your pal's cool Munich apartment rather than in a hotel.

Bathrooms have a sauna-like feel, thanks perhaps to the dimmer switches. Almost all have bath/shower combos, and are decked out in beige, with REN toiletries. We liked the window from the bath to the room, so you can talk to your room pal--but it can be closed too, if you aren'ttravelingg as a couple.

The reception is done in sleek gray stone with a high-tech gas fireplace along one wall. The little flower vases are a nice touch. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and a welcome drink and treat are all part and parcel of the hotel.

The hotel's reasonably sized gym is well-equipped, including weights.

Guests can borrow the hotel's Pelago bikes for free, or ask about running trails around the city.

The cool Grapes Weinbar, which has a small sunny terrace and a fireplace in winter (plus a happy hour) is lovely, with butterfly chairs and cool books on art and music. It has brunch on Sundays, and the hotel's tasty breakfast is served here. As well as a buffet with ingredients from the Viktualienmarkt, fresh eggs are made to order.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Breakfast is great, but it isn't always included, and is quite expensive. There are other options nearby.

See above--you can eat at the Weinbar, but it's also a great spot for a relaxed drink any time of the day.

Getting Around

The hotel's very central location means that most of Munich's best sights are within a very quick stroll. For trips further afield, it's only a short walk to S- and U-bahn stations.

Albarone (5-minute walk) is a fantastic Mediterranean restaurant, with lovely food and service. Or treat yourself at Schwarzreiter (4-minute walk), the Michelin-starred fancypants restaurant at the Kempinski.

You are only steps from the lively beerhall, Hofbräuhaus (2-minute walk), so it would be rude not to sample its atmosphere (and beers). Or MUC (4-minute walk) is a cheery, cozy little bar round the corner.

A proper design hotel that still embraces comfort and treats rather than sparse minimalism. We like. Plus it's right in the middle of town.
