Fodor's Expert Review The Mandala Hotel

Potsdamer Straße 3, 10785 Berlin Germany See on Map

This privately-owned luxury hotel exudes a cool, serene, Zen-like ambiance, with understated floral arrangements and calming, neutral tones throughout. Rooms are large and light-filled, and each is individually designed with subtle color schemes and high-end furnishings. High points include the top-floor spa and gym, with stunning city views, and the two-Michelin-star Facil restaurant, set in a gorgeous glass atrium in the hotel’s courtyard.

Decked out in soothing buff, gray and cream tones, with handcrafted tables, wood floors and silk curtains, the generously-proportioned rooms and suites are filled with light, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. Most courtyard-facing rooms have balconies; others offer nice-sized terraces with city views. All have kitchenettes, mini-bars, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

Guests can take advantage of free self-service washers and dryers on several floors of the hotel.

Large, green-marble bathrooms have combination tubs-rainforest showers, while the higher category rooms have separate bathtubs. The organic, vegan amenities are by Berlin-based i+m.

The small lobby feels private and exclusive, with gray velvet seating and fresh flowers.

Surrounded by windows, Mandala’s 11th-floor ONO Spa offers city views from the multiple saunas—including a ladies’ only sauna—as well as the relaxation areas and treatment rooms. It’s the only spa in Berlin to have special holistic benches to promote detoxification and relaxation, via infrared waves or sound and light technology.

The intimate second-floor Qiu Restaurant & Bar serves casual international fare, including a nicely-priced business lunch. But it’s the two-Michelin-star Facil, tucked into a glass atrium on the hotel’s fifth floor, that really wows with Michael Kempf’s masterful cooking.

For those who want to sleep in and can’t make breakfast by 10 a.m., Qiu offers a late breakfast until noon.

The intimate Qiu bar has a masterful mixologist team that whips up seasonal cocktails using house-made infusions and syrups.

Getting Around

Set just off busy Potsdamer Platz and across from the Sony Center, the hotel is a few minutes' walk to the S-Bahn and regional train service at Potdamer Platz Bahnhof.

Brasserie Desbrosses (5-minute walk) serves top-notch steak frites, along with locally sourced cheese and fish. In the Sony Center, Josty (6-minute walk) serves traditional German cuisine in a sleek, thoroughly modern dining room.

With 304 different types of whiskey, Vox Bar (3-minute walk) has the largest selection of whiskey in Germany. The tri-level Lindenbrau (5-minute walk), in the Sony Center, serves a huge variety of suds, including Bavarian-style wheat beer, Berlin Pilsner and craft brews—and there’s a wonderful biergarten-like atmosphere on the seasonal roof terrace.

The elegant five-star property feels like a sanctuary amid the bustling area, from the crisp modern rooms—some of the largest in the city—to the gourmet, glass-enclosed restaurant to the soothing top-floor holistic spa.
