Why We Like It

In an area with few luxury hotel options, this independent four-star property is a great option, with plenty of historic charm and a nice variety of rooms and price points. Plus, you can’t beat the stellar location, just steps from Sanssouci Park.

Fodor's Expert Review

Just steps from Sanssouci Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and with spectacular views of historic Luisenplatz and the city's restored Prussian city mansions, this is one of the most pleasant and conveniently located properties in Potsdam. The historic hotel’s baroque-style furnishings are warm and inviting, echoing the personal, friendly service. Rooms are large, bright, and comfortable. The spa area with sauna and solarium are an added bonus for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.

Tip If you book directly on the hotel’s website, you’ll receive a free transportation card that covers public transport (trains, trams, and buses) in both Potsdam and Berlin.

Room

Rooms range from compact single-bed accommodations (economy rooms) to expansive apartments with kitchenettes and separate sitting areas. Some rooms also have balconies. The junior suites and suites feature elegant antiques and views of the park or the Luisenplatz.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are large (excepting in the economy rooms) and some boast both showers and Jacuzzi tubs. As this is a historic property, each is different in size and layout.

Lobby

White-marble steps, lemon-yellow walls and a seating area with antique-style chairs, small round tables and beautiful landscape paintings recall the grandeur of this former city palace that dates from the early 18th century.

Dining

The recently renovated El Baron serves Argentine cuisine and hearty steaks, but the real draw is the dual-level Wiener Restaurant & Café, modeled on a traditional Viennese coffeehouse. Come for the huge variety of cakes and views over the Luisenplatz and Potsdam’s Brandenberg Gate. There is also dining on the front terrace during the summer months.

Getting Around

Its location in the heart of downtown Potsdam means the major local attractions are within walking distance. It is about 45 minutes by car or public transport (combination train and bus) from central Berlin to the hotel.

Restaurants

At the edge of the historic Dutch quarter, Restaurant Juliette (10-minute walk) serves outstanding classic French cuisine in a cozy 17th-century half-timbered house replete with brick walls and stone fireplaces. In Sanssouci Park, it’s hard to miss Potsdam Zur Historische Mühle (15-minute walk)— just look for the giant windmill. This sprawling restaurant/event space is best for a casual lunch or in summer, when you can take advantage of its large terrace or the beer garden. Lewy Wein-Bistro (7-minute walk) does old-school German fare well, with an impressive wine selection to boot.

Bars

Fritz'n Bar (9-minute walk) shakes up well-crafted cocktails in a fashionable lounge-like setting. Night-owls should head to Unscheinbar (14-minute walk), whose live music and DJ scene stretches into the wee hours. Kneipf Hafthorn (12-minute walk) has a sprawling beer garden during warm weather and a cozy interior when it’s chilly out.
