Why We Like It

This glamorous Berlin landmark has an unbeatable location, adjacent to the Brandenburg Gate, and a well-deserved reputation as one of the city’s finest luxury hotels. Top marks go to the spectacularly designed lobby, with its elephant fountain and eye-catching 12-foot-tall Murano glass chandelier. And the spa’s heated indoor pool, whirlpool, steam baths and saunas are ideal for relaxing and rejuvenating after a long flight or day of sightseeing.

Fodor's Expert Review

The first Adlon was considered Europe's ultimate luxury resort—it was the model for the novel (and later Hollywood film) “Grand Hotel”— until it was destroyed in World War II. The new version, built in 1997, has a nostalgic aesthetic, and the elegant rooms are furnished with turn-of-the-century photos of the original hotel, along with cherrywood trim, mahogany furnishings, and brocade silk bedspreads. With its prime setting on Pariser Platz, this is the government's unofficial guesthouse. The Adlon Spa by Resense sports three luxurious levels of wellness. And dining options include the two-Michelin-starred Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer and Sra Bua, from Michelin-star chef Tim Raue, which features modern Asian-inspired cuisine.

Room

Rooms and suites have limestone floors, elegant traditional wood furnishings and big windows overlooking either the courtyard or Pariser Platz. Modern amenities include flat-screen TVs, laptop-size safes, a fax and Nespresso machines. Some suites have four-poster beds, separate living areas, kitchenettes and fireplaces.

Tip There are six rooms that offer special hypoallergenic pillows and fabrics to accommodate guests with allergies.

Bathroom

Glossy black granite bathrooms have heated floors, bathtubs and showers. Larger suites have whirlpool baths.

Lobby

An array of couches and armchairs are scattered about the limestone lobby, which was recently expanded to create more seating and a larger bar. Still there is the iconic elephant fountain—presented to the Adlon in 1930 by India's Maharajah of Patiala—and the impressive glass and gold-leaf domed ceiling.

Spa

Pamper yourself in the luxurious 9,000-square-foot, tri-level Resense Spa, with massages and body treatments, as well as La Prairie facials. For the ultimate in privacy, three exclusive private spa suites each come with their own Finnish sauna, steam shower, Jacuzzi or relaxation day bed, private sound system and color therapy wall.

Dining

There are multiple dining options in the hotel, from the fanciful two-Michelin-starred Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer to the sleek Thai-inspired Sra Bua to the more traditional Restaurant Quarré, with international fare and a fantastic brunch.

Drinking

Inventive cocktails incorporating Asian ingredients like green tea and yuzu complement the Far East vibe at the Sra Bua Bar, while the plush Lobby Bar, with its live piano music, is a pleasant spot for glass of wine or champagne cocktail.
