The airy, modernized Musée Bonnat, in itself reason enough to visit Bayonne, has a notable treasury of 19th-century paintings collected by French portraitist and historical painter Léon Bonnat (1833–1922). Unfortunately the museum is currently closed for extensive renovation work until 2018. Until then, private visits can be arranged for serious students and scholars.
