When to Go

Spring and fall are the best months to experience the dazzling light, rugged rocky countryside, and fruited vineyards of Provence. Though the lavender fields show peak color in July, summertime here is beastly hot; worse, it's always crowded on the beaches and connecting roads. In winter (November through February, even into March) you'll find many tourist services closed, including hotels and restaurants. Much of the terrace life is driven indoors by rain and wind, but around Easter the plane trees begin to leaf out and the café tables begin to sprout once more.
