Fodor's Expert Review Place de la République

Arles Plaza/Square

The slender, expressive saints of St-Trophime overlook the wide steps that attract sunners and foot-weary travelers who enjoy the modern perspective over this broad urban square, flanked by the classical symmetry of the 17th-century Hôtel de Ville. This noble Italianate landmark is the work of the great 17th-century Parisian architect François Mansart (as in mansard roofs); a passageway allows you to cut through its graceful vestibule from Rue Balze. The obelisk, of Turkish marble, used to stand in the Gallo-Roman cirque and was hauled here in the 18th century.
