Fodor's Expert Review Musée Angladon

Avignon Art Museum

This superb collection of major 18th- to 20th-century paintings and furnishings was assembled by the famous Parisian couturier Jacques Doucet (1853–1929), who counted many of the major painters and writers of his day among his close circle and purchased—or funded—some of the great works of the 20th century (he was the original owner of Picasso's Demoiselles d'Avignon). With an unerring eye, this great appreciator of the arts created a collection that he then housed in this mansion, which he purchased toward the end of his life; it includes works by Degas, Van Gogh, Manet, Cézanne, Modigliani, and Picasso, along with important drawings, sculpture, photography, and furniture. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.
