Fodor's Expert Review Château de Candie

Rue du Bois de Candie, Chambéry-le-Vieux, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 73000, France

If you wish to experience la vie Savoyarde in all its pastel-hued glory, head to this towering 14th-century manor on a hill east of Chambéry. Guest rooms range from sweet peasant-luxe to blowout magnificence (the chandeliered nuptial chamber, for one, has a red-velvet canopy bed). Owner Didier Lhostis, an avid antiques collector, filled the rooms with an array of delights, including sculpted wood paneling, honey-gold beams, carved armoires, and glorious regional fabrics. The restaurant delivers more high style on your plate—it's famous for wedding feasts, but anyone can delight in treats like rabbit terrine with shallot compote or escalope de fruits de mer with copious seafood arranged in the shape of a lobster.

PROS

  • glorious views over the neighboring Chartreuse monastery and village
  • interesting antiques abound
  • personal service from host

CONS

  • not right in town, so a car is required
  • won't appeal to minimalists
  • not much in the way of nightlife
