Fodor's Expert Review Château de Locguénolé

Rte. de Port-Louis, Kervignac, Brittany, 56700, France Fodor's Choice

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

According to legend, St-Guénolé (for whom the 19th-century château was named) took refuge on this spot while fleeing the devil, and it remains a grand retreat—after all, it’s part of a sweeping 250-acre estate with lush garden and stunning water views. On the main floor, four stately salons remain exactly as they were when the family—who still maintain the hotel—lived here; and the guest rooms carry on the regal feel with divine architectural details and attractive antiques. Superb gourmet meals can be enjoyed on several outdoor terraces, although the candlelit and tapestried Michelin-star dining room is hard to beat. For guests seeking a more virtuous itinerary, a "fasting" package offers every possible diversion, including walks through the estate's ancient forests, sailing, mountain biking, swimming in a pool surrounded by rose gardens, tennis, and a full range of spa treatments.
