Cleveland Way. Helmsley, on the southern edge of the moors, is the starting point of the long-distance moor-and-coastal footpath known as the Cleveland Way. Boots go on at the old cross in the market square, then it's 50 miles or so across the moors to the coast, followed by a similar distance south to Filey along the cliffs. The footpath is 110 miles long and takes around nine days start to finish. The trail passes close to Rievaulx Abbey, a few miles outside town. Helmsley, North Yorkshire. www.nationaltrail.co.uk.
