Near the Long Man of Wilmington, this small "restaurant with rooms" sits in a whitewashed house with 2 acres of gardens. Guest rooms are decorated in warm, upbeat colors that contrast with the lovely antique furniture. Convenient for walks in the countryside, the hotel is near the hills of the South Downs, a 15-minute drive from the Glyndebourne Opera House. The restaurant serves good, classic British meals, with plenty of regional specialties—rack of lamb, for instance, or fresh catch of the day. Three courses are around £41; special offers sometimes include greatly reduced dinner–bed-and-breakfast packages. There's also a cottage offering more privacy and a kitchen.
