Fodor's Expert Review Oldfields Noted Eating House

$$ Durham British

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

At this convivial restaurant, cheerful raspberry walls and unfussy walnut furnishings create a nicely laid-back vibe that complements the excellent food. The menu focuses on ultra-traditional flavors made with organic, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients. Some dishes are likely to baffle anyone from outside the region; you might find pan haggarty (a classic Northumberland specialty made with cheese, onions, and potatoes), or clapshot (a Scottish favorite made with swede, turnips, potatoes, and beef dripping) alongside mains of cottage (minced beef) pie, cod with spicy sausage, or rib-eye steak with fat chips. There's not much choice for non-carnivores, but let them know in advance and the chef can prepare an extra vegetarian option.
