Fodor's Expert Review The Hoxton Shoreditch

81 Great Eastern St., London, EC2A 3HU, England See on Map Fodor's Choice

Chic and stylish with a strong utilitarian streak running throughout, the 210-room Hoxton is every inch the modern urban hotel. Established in 2006 and proving a roaring success with hip locals and corporate clients alike, the combination of a great location in the heart of trendy Shoreditch and a clubby, sociable atmosphere make it an ideal east London choice.

YOU SHOULD KNOW In town and need a quiet place to work during the day that also offers the option of a comfortable sleep? The hotel offers day rates on rooms from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At the Hoxton, all rooms are created equal, well, almost equal. Guests are given the option of the Shoebox, the Cosy and the Roomy, with each category decorated in its own identical style. Space is the only choice to make, with each category adopting a swanky, vaguely mid-century style with some quirky flourishes that defy its price point.

If you want something different to the usual Hoxton room, you’ll have to ask for it. Styled by local artists, a small number of concept rooms are available on request.

All rooms come with compact bathrooms decorated in dark, polished tiles, and walk-in showers.

A bar, restaurant, and events space merges with the check-in area to create one large, multifaceted lobby space that offers a visual display of the hotel’s credo (which is probably something like ‘Work, rest, and play!’).

In school lunch style, rooms come with a simple continental breakfast served in a brown paper bag, which is a nice touch. For more substantial dining, the Chicago-inspired Hoxton Grill provides options from breakfast through dinner, so think anything from smashed avocado on sourdough to rib-eye steak in a semi-industrial space replete with red booths, exposed brick and stripped wooden floorboards.

Get your drink on at the long, sit-up bar till late, where cocktails and craft beers are the specialties. A genuine neighborhood drinking, dining and dancing spot, it won’t just be guests who make up the hip, young crowd when DJs play on weekends.

Getting Around

A short Tube or cab ride from the West End, Shoreditch is a great place to stay to explore a different side of the capital. Close to Dalston and Hackney’s easterly neighborhoods, it’s the ideal location if you’re interested in markets, independent shopping and quirky galleries and museums. Shoreditch High Street Overground station offers good connections to the north and south of the city, while the Northern Line at Old Street Tube is the easiest way to Central London.

If you’ve got the taste for the grill try Red Dog Saloon (5-minute walk) and it’s hot wing challenge—if you dare. Alternatively, try the excellent contemporary Thai food at Som Saa (14-minute walk).

With so many bars in Shoreditch you need only walk a block and you’ll likely stumble on a neat place to drink. For a helping hand in getting started, try Happiness Forgets (5-minute walk) for amazing cocktails or The Old Blue Last (3-minute walk) for great live music and a clientele that loves to pose.

Hip to its core, the Hoxton is an excellent space for those who want to base themselves in a hotel that becomes the party on weekends. Just as appropriate for business guests as it is for visitors looking to enjoy the multitude of adventures one can find in this neighborhood, its excellent location, service, and drinking and dining make it easy to overlook its lack of a gym or pool.
