British Zoo Celebrates Momentous Birth of 200 Tarantulas

Spiders

The news of 200 extra tarantulas making an appearance is rarely greeted as a pleasant surprise, but the invertebrate keepers at England’s Chester Zoo couldn’t be more excited. The zoo announced that after years of work they had succeeded in breeding Montserrat tarantulas, the first to be born in captivity. The mating process for the tarantulas, found only on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, can be a hit or miss situation. Males drum intricate rhythms on the webs of females not knowing whether or not they’ll be chosen as prey or partner. The baby arachnids have been placed in their own individual pots where they’ll be nurtured to adulthood before being introduced to a life of web-drumming and tarantula-on-tarantula cannibalism.
