Fodor's Expert Review Phoenix
Bredgade 37, Frederiksstaden, Copenhagen, Capital Region, 1260, Denmark See on Map
The property was originally built in the 1680s but was torn down and rebuilt—rising from its rubble, just like the mythical Phoenix rose from its ashes—in 1847 as a plush, Victorian-style hotel. It still has a kind of slightly faded glitz and glamour, and a colorful history: it was once the house of the co-founder of the East India Company, and after him, the royal watchmaker. It's a good bet if you want to be close to the royal palace.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel is close enough to city-center attractions and on a reasonably busy road, so it gets a fair amount of street noise; light sleepers should ask for rooms above the second floor.
room
Suites are large and adorned with 18-karat-gold-plated bathroom fixtures and reproductions of antiques; standard rooms are very small, measuring barely 9 by 15 feet. Beds are comfortable, though.
Check out the hotel's gallery corridor, where the owners (the Arp-Hansen family, who own a number of properties in Copenhagen) display their Golden Age art collection of paintings from the first half of the 19th century.
bathroom
A decent size and clean, although some guests have found the step up into the bathroom a bit of a trip hazard, particularly late at night.
lobby
The lobby is elegant if a little old-fashioned, and staff are kindly.
gym
There's a very small fitness center.
dining
Breakfast is served in the van Plessen restaurant, and downstairs is Murdoch's Books & Ale, a snug pub done up in mahogany and brass that serves smørrebrød and light meals.

drinking
Murdoch's Books & Ale, as the title suggests, is a cosy enough spot for a pre or post dinner drink too, with book-lined walls.

LOCATION
Getting Around
The hotel is very close to the harborfront and the royal palace, and Kongens Nytorv metro stop - which gets you to the airport in about 15 minutes - is only a 5-minute walk.
Restaurants
Ida Davidsen (3-minute walk) is a historic smørrebrød restaurant in the heart of the city. Pluto (4-minute walk) is a friendly and reasonably priced eatery with an informal vibe and tasty options.
WHY WE LIKE IT
If the Phoenix doesn't soar above the competition, it certainly keeps up, with its four centuries of history, central location and reasonable prices.
