Fodor's Expert Review Mamaison Hotel Riverside Prague

Janáčkovo nabř. 15, Prague, Praha 150 00, Czech Republic See on Map

True to its name, the Riverside is situated right above the Vltava across from Frank Gehry's Dancing House. The location, just below Malá Strana in Smíchov, makes for unobstructed views of the National Theater as well as of Prague Castle itself; courtyard-facing rooms get balconies as a consolation prize. Breakfast is served in a nook in the basement, and there's often a lively mix of guests gathered in the lobby bar. There's a strong offering for business guests and conferences too.

Book through the website for good deals and (probably) surprises from staff to say thank you, such as a bottle of wine waiting in your room.

Some rooms look out over the river, but courtyard-facing rooms get balconies as a consolation prize. The look here, designed by Frenchman Pascale de Montremy, differs from the strict modern or overstuffed baroque of many Czech hotels, with a theme of preppy stripes on the curtains and headboards and hardwood floors. Electric blackout shutters will help sensitive sleepers get more shut-eye.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The front-facing rooms are on a reasonably busy road, but the soundproofing is good. However, if you are a very light sleeper, request a quiet room.

The gold tiles and organically shaped bathroom fixtures might not be to all tastes, but the bathrooms (bath or shower) are generally of a reasonable size and very clean.

The gorgeous art nouveau exterior of the building is not quite matched by the lobby, which feels a little dated. Staff are professional and welcoming though.

There's no restaurant, but the breakfast is a good spread and you can get light meals in the lounge bar.

The lounge bar itself manages to avoid the curse of some hotel bars which feel over-corporate, instead welcoming a mix of guests into a convivial atmosphere.

You are brilliantly located for the occasional street markets that take place on both sides of the river. Náplavka on the other side is more famous, but you could luck out and find something happening just below your hotel as well.

Getting Around

A taxi or Uber can get you to, for example, the Charles Bridge in just over ten minutes, but the walk is only 20 minutes and it is a really pleasant trip alongside the river, with a chance to see some of Prague's less famous but still beautiful waterside buildings.

Just over the bridge, treat yourself to a splurge at Ginger & Fred (8-minute walk) on the rooftop of the Dancing House, delivering possibly Prague's most scenic meal. Or join the locals at Náplavka (8-minute walk), a strip of pop-up bars and restaurants and often food stalls across the river.

For tasty Czech food and delicious, fresh beer, leave behind the tourists and turn right at the front of your hotel to head to the Anděl neighborhood and Potrefená husa (13-minute walk), a Staropramen brewpub. Or go straight to source--the Staropramen Brewery (13-minute walk) is a similar distance and offers tours and tastings.

A slightly out-of-the-way location allows for more adventurous travelers to experience other more authentic parts of Prague, while still being within walking distance of the main sights. A fun lobby bar and good deals, plus the pleasant riverside location, add up to a strong offering for the price.
