In addition to Venetian fortifications, the Old City contains the Selimiye Mosque, originally the 13th-century Cathedral of St. Sophia and a fine example of Gothic architecture to which a pair of minarets has been added. Unfortunately, open hours are erratic, so it is often by chance that visitors are allowed to enter, something most easily done in the summer, when the mosque is open more often.
