Climb the stone stairs onto the spacious terrace or dine inside the softly lit 13th-century manor, one of the most impressive examples of feudal architecture in Croatia. Kastel's offerings reflect its geographic location, representing both the Adriatic Sea and the continental plains with delicious detail. While the menu is seasonal, their vibrantly balanced green and black risottos impress year-round.
Nestled in a verdant dale in Tuškanac Park, a 15-minute walk from the center in a low-rise building that might be mistaken for a ranch-style house, this prestigious fish restaurant specializes in creative Mediterranean fare, with the house favorites including buzara (stew prepared with shellfish and scampi and/or fish) and sea bass fillets in saffron and scampi sauce, as well as appetizers like avocado with scampi, not to mention a few meat delicacies. The dining room is light and airy, with candlelit tables, a wooden floor, palmlike little trees, and colorful abstract art. There's also an adjoining wine bar. In warm weather there's outdoor seating on a spacious, leafy terrace, and a playground just outside invites children to scamper about while parents rest on benches. Reservations are recommended.
Wedged between the cathedral and the Dolac farmer's market, jazzy bistro Pod Zidom offers a creative take on traditional Croatian dishes, making the most of fresh ingredients at its doorstep. The chef is renowned for his beef cheek, served up with a different sauce depending on the season and cooked for 12 hours before making it to your plate. Wash it down with a bottle from the impressive array of Croatian wines (from all four wine regions) available. Pod Zidom serves from its own wine label too. Keeping it close to traditional values, the emphasis is on meat and fish dishes but varies according to what is in season and available. Everything is homemade here, from the bread to any sort of pickled goods. You can sleep onsite at the ultra-exclusive Pod Zidom Rooms mini-hotel, which features just four rooms (all of which feature designer decor and views of the Zagreb Cathedral inner courtyard) above the restaurants.
Under the expert guidance of chef Mario Mihelj, El Toro serves up delicious Latin American fusion fare. Enjoy everything from roast meat to paella in the restaurant's romantically low-lit interior that blends matte black decor with wooden elements. El Toro also hosts DJ sets and live music weekly. The restaurant is located just outside the city center, about a 20-minute walk from the main square.
