Požega

In the center of a fertile, vineyard-rich valley in Požega-Slavonia County (one of the smallest in Croatia), lies the area that the ancient Romans knew as "Vallis Aurea," or the Golden Valley. Going against Slavonia's reputation as one big, flat agricultural plain, this area is mountainous, with forested hills covered by the vineyards of more than 30 private wineries. It is a wonderful place to base yourself for a couple of days to sample great wine and explore nearby Papuk Nature Park.

The administrative and cultural center of the area is Požega (pop. 21,000). During the 150-year-long period of Ottoman rule that began in 1537, Požega became central Slavonia's most important administrative and military center. By the 19th century Požega's cultural dynamism had earned it a reputation as the "Athens of Slavonia," and in 1847 it became the first city to officially adopt the Croatian language. Today it is one of the prettiest towns in central Slavonia.

Just 23 km (14 miles) northeast of Požega is a small town called Kutjevo. It has a winemaking history dating back to the 13th century, and if there is any town where all of life is dedicated to viticulture, it is here. Nearly all 2,500 residents make a living from wine, and even the main square is named Trg Graševine after Slavonia’s signature white wine; indeed, this is an excellent place to try it as 80% of Croatia's total Graševina production is here.
