When to Go

The Kvarner region gets very busy in high summer, so don't even dream of heading, for instance, to Opatija or Krk in August without accommodations lined up. Late May through early June and September are ideal times to visit, since you can expect good weather, warm seas, and open facilities. Early May and October are good if you're looking for peace and quiet, but remember that there are fewer tourist-related activities on offer, and you still need to book accommodations in advance. Rijeka and Opatija have increasingly become an exciting place to visit during carnival season from late January through February, a time of year referred to as the "fifth season."
