When to Go

High season runs from July through August, when tourists from all over the world flock to the region and the weather averages from the mid-80s to the mid-90s Fahrenheit. Split Airport is connected to over 100 locations during this time, and dozens of different airlines have scheduled flights into Split, making it one of Croatia's most accessible destinations. Prices at this time can rise significantly, restaurant visits may require reservations, main beaches can be crowded, and it can be difficult to find a place to sleep if you haven't reserved in advance. Because of all this, local tourism ramps things up even more to provide the best experiences for its guests: museums and churches have extended hours, open-air bars and clubs bring nightlife to the fore, and numerous cultural festivals host performances starring international musicians, dancers, and actors.

Low season runs from November through April, when some hotels and restaurants close completely. Exceptions during these slower months are around Christmas and the New Year, when Advent markets pop up with food stands and live music galore, among other events organized to celebrate the holidays. The weather can be unreliable during this time, but if you're lucky, you can find yourself drinking morning coffee in the sunshine below a deep blue sky, against a backdrop of snowcapped mountains.

However, many tout mid-season, May through June and September through October, as the best time to visit the region. During these periods you'll miss the crowds, the weather is most often sunny and dry, and the sea is still warm enough for swimming. The region's hotels and restaurants will still be open, but their pace is slow enough to lend an air of true relaxation.
