A funky garden restaurant, Konoba & bar Lola offers something refreshingly different on the island of Vis. The atmosphere is relaxed, the food is fresh, and most of the vegetables come from Lola's own garden on the mainland. Their innovative dishes are sure to hit the spot, from appetizers such as beetroot with figs and goat cheese to mains like steak and chocolate truffles for dessert. They also have great cocktails.
On the tiny island of Sveti Klement, a 20-minute taxi-boat ride from Hvar Town, this terrace restaurant is backed by a romantic wilderness of Mediterranean flora and offers stunning views over the open sea. Besides wonderfully fresh seafood, dishes include kožji sir sa rukolom (goat cheese with arugula), and pašticada (beef stewed in sweet wine and prunes). The owner is well known for her love of art and culture as well as food: the walls are decorated with contemporary Croatian art, and there are classical music recitals on Sunday morning.
This seaside Mediterranean restaurant is spearheaded by two of the area's most celebrated chefs, Sandra and Dane Tahirović. Their haute, edgy takes on classic Adriatic cuisine include dishes like tuna tartare served in a sea urchin (with the spines on).
A small, low-key restaurant, tucked away on the second floor of a 15th-century palazzo just off the main square, Apetit serves traditional dishes that are made with fresh, locally sourced, high-quality ingredients. Some favorites to look out for are Jadranska lignja sa žara (Adriatic grilled squid) or a house specialty, rezanci s kozicama (homemade tagliatelle with prawn).
Surrounded on all four sides by the shade of an olive grove, this restaurant is the perfect place to wind down a day of sun and sightseeing. It's known for the steak and lamb from the peka and fish prepared traditionally na gradele (on the grill). There's an area for kids to play, and they also have apartments to rent on-site.
Fresh fish takes center stage at this superb restaurant hidden away on a narrow, cobbled street of Hvar Town. The dining room is simply furnished with wooden tables, discreet modern art, and a large open fire, and the food and service are practically faultless.
Above the ACI Marina, at the foot of Marjan Hill and close to the gardens of Sveti Stipan, this seafood restaurant has a light and airy minimalist interior, plus a summer terrace where you can watch the yachts sail in and out of port. In the vein of "slow food," the kitchen gives great care to seasonal ingredients and presentation. The former owner, Zoran Grašo, is a retired basketball player, and his son Petar Grašo is a famous singer, so you may spot some local celebrities from time to time among the diners.
Hanging plants, funky paintings, and colorful canvases set the mood inside this old stone building, where the interior garden is draped with vines and decorated with pots of herbs and cherry tomatoes. Barbecued seafood tops the menu, but there's also a select choice of Thai dishes.
The dining-room walls here are hung with seascapes and fishing nets, and the waiters wear traditional Dalmatian waistcoats. The fresh fish and pržene lignje (fried squid) are excellent, and there's also a reasonable choice of Croatian meat dishes. The restaurant can seem a little dour at lunchtime, but mellows when the candles are lighted during the evening. It's a five-minute walk west of the city center, and there are a couple of tables outside by the entrance for outdoor dining.
