Fodor's Expert Review Monasterium PoortAckere
Oude Houtlei 56, Ghent, Flanders, 9000, Belgium
A complex comprising a former abbey, convent, and beguinage is now a serene place to stay in a central neighborhood, though an ongoing expansion is doubling its capacity. Some sections date back to the 13th century; most of the buildings, though, are 19th-century Gothic Revival. There are large comfortable rooms in the Monasterium, the former convent; some former cells nearby have been transformed into small, basic single guest rooms with a washbasin (cold water only) and shared showers and toilets. You can even take breakfast in the chapter house.
PROS
- unique historical setting
- breakfasts are outstanding
- bargain-priced rooms
CONS
- a lot of stairs to climb (though there are two elevators)
- continuing renovation means noise
- older rooms are a little worn
