Fodor's Expert Review Abrussel

$ Lower Town Belgian

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This small, two-floor affair is a cramped little wonder, dishing up grandmotherly stews in a colorful, modern setting that does well with so little room. The cooking is pure Flemish comfort---all brown shrimp croquettes, meatballs, stoempe (a traditional Belgian mashed potato dish), and seafood waterzooi (stew)---but served with finesse and an eye for what works. It's nothing adventurous, but everything is done right, and the cheery, brisk service and intimate setting gives the place a freshness lacking in many of the overpriced 'old stagers' (high-priced, dated cafés with lousy service) that tend to dominate around the Grand Place.
