Sans Souci Hotel

Burggasse 2, Vienna, Vienna, 1070, Austria, Vienna, Austria

Why We Like It

The service is impeccable. Every detail is tended to make you feel truly pampered. And the location is ideal: right in the heart of the MuseumsQuartier, yet a stone's throw from Innere Stadt, the wonderful Naschmarkt, the shopping street, and Rathaus.

Fodor's Expert Review

Grandly appointed in the MuseumsQuartier, this hotel houses its own masterpieces including works by Roy Lichtenstein. In French, Sans Souci means "carefree," and the lodging's nearly whimsical ambience evokes just that.

Where there is opulence, it is with a wink, as in the chandeliers, which arch above the large, modern soaking tubs in the bathrooms. The parquet floors bring to mind a true Vienna residence, and the art deco accents are a refreshing break from the modernism that dominates so many of today's hotels.

Be pampered by the goodies at your door. Staff is known to drop off wine gratis as a welcome, and you're a phone call away from a cup of coffee brought to the room, also gratis.

Room

Spacious and artful. The palette is soft, but inviting, and the high ceilings give the feel of a modern loft apartment. Furnishings are a mix of art deco and mid-century modern; TV's are huge, and craftily hidden in the mirror.

Bathroom

Also roomy, with large showers, soaking tubs, and double sinks.

You Should Know Counter space is tight, so don't plan to unload your toiletries unless you travel especially light.

Lobby

A lavender globe of a room, featuring a purple-highlighted chandelier, showcasing the circle-themed tiling of the floor. The effect is both calming and contemplative.

Pool

The indoor pool is 20 meters long, great for doing laps.

You Should Know The pool is narrow, so two swimmers at the same time, yet with different speeds, can be tricky.

Spa

Massages offered include Detox and Balinese, among a selection of others that can be tailored specifically for you. There are also a host of facials and foot massages available. All products used are natural, without paraben, paraffin or synthetic ingredients. If you must cancel your massage or treatment, do so 24 hours in advance, or you'll be charged 80% of the full fee.

Tip The hotel recommends that you arrive for your massage having showered, and wearing your hotel bathrobe and slippers.

Gym

It is fully equipped with cardio and free weights. As it is integrated with the spa, there are two saunas (one hotter than the other), a steam bath and a tanning salon.

Dining

Veranda serves modern Austrian cuisine, with a warm kitchen until 10 p.m. Full breakfasts are served here as well.

Drinking

Le Bar is open weekends 'til 2 a.m., and is an ideal spot for champagne tasting, or a lovingly-crafted cocktail.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Parking is nearly impossible in the MuseumsQuartier. You are only 15 minutes by foot to the Innere Stadt, and five minutes from the shopping street, Mariahilferstrasse. You are steps from a choice of Ubahn stations.

Restaurants

The Prix Fixe style at Restaurant 1070 is not for everyone the restaurant has no menu; instead, the chef crafts something he believes you will love, after a discussion with you (primarily about what you don't like). Gerstner offers old-style, yet under-stated elegance, homemade pastries, and a pleasing view of the Opera House. Figlmüller, in the nearby Old University district, is one of Vienna's premier dining establishments and where you can be sure to have some of the finest Schnitzel in town.

Bars

Haas Haas is the hip spot that hits the spot for after dinner drinks and aperitifs, and all comes with a remarkable, up-close view of the Stephansdom. On a summer evening, settle in outdoors at Reims OMG just up the road. Eulennest Wine Bar offers a lovely selection of wines, with a tasting board and friendly service to go with it.
