Why We Like It

Staying here won't break the bank, and it's the sort of place where the possibility of making friends for life with the other guests is a real possibility. The neighborhood is anything but touristy, and you are just a simple Ubahn ride from the main attractions.

Fodor's Expert Review

More hostel than hotel, this is a companion accomodation to the nearby Downtown Sissi. Emperor Franz Josef and his Bavarian-born wife Elisabeth, affectionately known by Austrians as “Sissi,” were the inspiration for these twinned hotels. Part of the Meininger Budget Hotel Group, the Franz is easy on the wallet without sacrificing service.

The bar is friendly and relaxed and gives off a pleasant cafe vibe.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Parking is easier here than in the Innere Stadt, but still metered, and still costly if you go over. The Taborstrasse Ubahn Station is less than five minutes away, and the hotel rents bikes at an affordable daily rate.

Restaurants

For Italian-style pizza cooked in a wood stove, head to Pizza Mari (seven minute walk) for the best pizza pie in the neighborhood. Don’t let the name throw you off, as Stomach (11 minute walk) is a charming, atmospheric eatery, that offers warm, Austrian fare, and they haven’t forgotten vegetarians. There is a children’s menu, too, and toys are also on site for the little tykes. Beautiful courtyard in summer. The Schoene Perle (eight minute walk) is a top choice for a sure-fire great meal and vibrant ambience. The selection of vegetarian options is top notch. It can get noisy, but that seems to add to the atmosphere, not detract.

Bars

Bricks (11-minute walk) is a dance bar that’s pretty fly with locals. Happy Hours weekdays and DJ’s throughout the week. Nearby is Hammonds (11-minute walk), which offers a relaxed atmosphere with a helpful, attentive staff. The Crown and Sword (ten-minute walk) is an Irish pub on the surface, with an old Austrian tavern just a scratch below the surface. If you’re lucky -- or not -- you might be able to challenge the locals to a game of darts.
