Fodor's Expert Review Deuring-Schlössle
Ehregutaplatz 4, Bregenz, Vorarlberg, A-6900, Austria
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
This 400-year-old castle (now under the Relais & Chateaux umbrella) comes with a Baroque tower that has inspired paintings by Turner and Schiele, and is a charming and atmospheric place to stay. You will find antiques in many of the public rooms. Guest rooms are individual and tastefully furnished with polished wood floors and lovely wainscoting. The owner, Heino Huber, who is also the chef of the hotel's highly regarded restaurant, offers gourmet cooking classes on request. If you want a blowout meal in a lovely, romantic setting, this is the place to go. In summer try to get a table in the charming courtyard.
PROS
- a genuine castle, yet modern where needed
- excellent kitchen
- personal service to make guests feel special
CONS
- a bit far from the lower town, where the action is
- only 13 rooms, so an early booking is required
