Fodor's Expert Review Fort Christian
St. Thomas's oldest existent structure, this remarkable building was built between 1672 and 1680 and is now a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Over the years, it was used as a jail, governor's residence, town hall, courthouse, and church. In 2005, a multimillion-dollar renovation project started to stabilize the structure and halt centuries of deterioration. This project was completed in 2017 in time to commemorate the centennial of the U.S. purchase of the territory from Denmark in 1917. You can tour the museum inside on your own or take a guided tour at 10 am or 1:45 pm. Outside, look for historic features, like the four renovated faces of the famous 19th-century clock tower.
