Dining on St. Thomas is informal. Few restaurants require a jacket and tie. Still, at dinner in the snazzier places shorts and T-shirts are inappropriate; men would do well to wear slacks and a shirt with buttons. Dress codes on St. Thomas rarely require women to wear skirts, but you can never go wrong with something flowing.
Tucked into a Red Hook shopping center, this down-home eatery has a congenial atmosphere and well-prepared sandwiches, flatbreads, and entrées that make it popular with local professionals. Come early for a seat at the bar and get the scoop on local island news. Lunch features sandwiches (the tuna burger is from fresh catch rather than a can), salads, and grilled flatbreads with tasty toppings like barbecue pulled pork. There's more of the same at dinner, plus entrées such as crab-topped mahi and New York strip.

Sports on wide-screen TVs and live music on weekends are two added attractions at this hip sports bar that's in the center of the action in Red Hook. The menu ranges from finger-licking barbecue ribs to more sophisticated fare, such as the signature filet mignon wrapped in bacon and smothered in melted Gorgonzola cheese. There's always a catch of the day; the fishing fleet is only steps away. A late-night menu is available from 10 pm until 4 am.

Graze on local lobster, burgers, and salads, as well as pizza baked in a stone-floored oven while gazing at the million-dollar megayachts docked right next to this hip seaside eatery. Even if you aren't hungry, stop here on Friday nights for the DJ Dance Party and Laser Light Show that starts at 10 pm.
5403 Yacht Haven Grande, Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas, 00802, U.S. Virgin Islands
With its colorful maritime flags, blue-and-white decor, and million-dollar views of megayachts docked just yards away, this open-air eatery has a seafood-centric menu to match its nautical theme. Small plates include tuna crudo, lump crab cakes, and shrimp ceviche, while entrée-size offerings feature soy-glazed red snapper and island-spiced blackened mahimahi. Add burgers, steaks, and pasta, and there's something for everyone. Sunday brunch, with standard eggs and pancake fare, is popular with locals. Yacht Haven Grande's cannon-studded lawn adjoins the property, where live music, themed events, and holiday celebrations happen throughout the year, giving diners a front-row view.

The Austrian-inspired menu at this quaint café includes five varieties of schnitzel and boasts a Caribbean flair with fresh-fish dishes like the house specialty of mahimahi in a lemon-butter sauce. Fork into omelets, waffles, Benedicts, or panini during weekend brunch from 10 am to 3 pm. Weekday lunchtime attracts a business crowd that breaks bread and brokers deals at the same time.

Watch fishermen deliver fresh fish like tuna, wahoo, mahimahi, and "ole wife" (a local whitefish) directly to the chef at this casual waterfront eatery. Opt for fish tacos, three types of po'boys (shrimp, oyster, and scallop), and the signature fresh local whole fish. The real deal is the daily happy hour from 3 to 6 pm, when you can order fresh oysters on the half shell for $15 per dozen or $8 per half-dozen. There's also a children's menu.

Anchored on the breezy Frenchtown waterfront and close to the pastel-painted boats of the local fishing fleet, this harbor-view eatery serves high-quality seafood dishes, as well as steaks, burgers, and salads. This is one of the few independent restaurants serving Sunday brunch.

Arrive before sunset for the magnificent view and handcrafted cocktails at the Pineapple Bar, but stay for the Latin meets American mix of dinner selections. Chef Benny is from Puerto Rico and he cooks the food he grew up with—garlic tostones, chicken breast with garlic and truffle mofonguitos, and braised pork masitas—which is showcased during his Thursday special, a Puerto Rican--style buffet; save room for the Coquito Rum Cake.
6600 Estate Smith Bay, Estate Smith Bay, Saint Thomas, 00802, U.S. Virgin Islands
This dockside eatery has a devoted following among local boaters, who swear by the traditional American and Irish fare. Try the eggs Benedict or Irish sausages and eggs for breakfast, or fork into fish-and-chips, cottage pie, or corned beef and cabbage for lunch or dinner. Beware: the resident iguanas will beg for table scraps—bring your camera.

There's no view here—even though you're at the top of a hill—but the somewhat hidden location has helped to keep this one of the island's best dining secrets. This wine shop and deli caters to a local lunch crowd. At night, you forget you're tucked into a nearly windowless building. The tableside bread for starters is a thick, crusty focaccia flavored with nearly 10 different vegetables. Try the drunken shrimp sauteed in tequila or the veal parmigiana. After-dinner cigars and wine complete the experience.

Gravel floors, plastic chairs, cloth-covered wooden tables, and an open-air view to the small marina give way to a great menu of dishes that blend down-home style with Caribbean flavors. There's a rib-eye steak smothered in cream sauce, spaghetti and meatballs, and six styles of burgers, plus stuffed crab and bite-sized chunks of deep-fried shark as appetizers. Live bands on the weekends always draw a big crowd of yachties and U.S. mainland expats.
