Fodor's Expert Review The Half Way House

Western Shore, Balfour Town, Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos Islands, Balfour Town, Salt Cay TKCA 1ZZ, Turks and Caicos Islands See on Map

This beautiful, three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom British colonial villa sits directly on the water's edge. Although it dates back to the 1830s, it was lovingly restored in 2014. Although furnished with antiques that reflect the time and place, comfortable sofas and seats are blended in to create a relaxed and warm atmosphere. The fully equipped kitchen comes with all modern appliances, set next to the large outdoor terrace with grill. All bedrooms reside on the second floor; their airy 10-foot ceilings are designed to welcome the ocean breezes. This is a wonderful spot for a discerning family or two couples traveling together, wishing to experience the historical allure of Salt Cay. Two bicycles are included in the rental, and groceries can be stocked at no extra charge.

The Half Way House offers three bedrooms, two with queen beds while the other has two twins. Rooms are elegantly furnished with antiques reflecting the era of the home.

The home boasts two full baths and one half bath, all three of which keep in theme with the rest of the house, albeit clean and modern. Soap and shampoo are provided.

This is a house, lovingly restored as a single rental. Check-in is coordinated from off-island.

There is no pool necessary at the Half Way House. The beauty of the ocean is just steps from your door.

Half Way House has a full kitchen that includes all major appliances, as well as an outdoor grill. Most guests look forward to the self catering side of a Salt Cay stay, with both indoor and outdoor dining options available at this villa. However, if you're interested in "dining out", there are two restaurants within walking distance; Coral Reef opens every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while reservations are required for all meals at Pat's Place.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Salt Cay is a tiny little community. Life here is laid back and familiar, therefore casual dining is definitely the rule.

There are limited options for drink and food on Salt Cay. Guests are recommended to bring what they need with them.

Getting Around

Salt Cay is a tiny little place. You can choose to walk most of the island during your stay, explore a little quicker by bicycle, or hire one of the several golf carts when available. You may also opt in to rent the 4 wheel drive XRT-1550 with the house at $100 a day.

At present, there are two small restaurants on Salt Cay. Coral Reef opens every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner (reservations needed for dinner). At Pat's Place, reservations are required for all meals. Things change quickly in this little community, therefore it is recommended to bring what is necessary from off-island.

There are two small restaurants on Salt Cay and a small convenience store where one may enjoy a "drink" away from their accommodation.

Salt Cay is truly a land that time forgot, boasting the smallest resident population of all the islands within the archipelago. Donkeys and cows amble about, locals feel like long time friends, and remnants of an era long past fills the soul. While visiting the island of Salt Cay with its rugged beauty, beach combing, diving, snorkeling, biking, and touring, are all possible - or one may meld quietly into the rhythm of this little community and wile away one's days in total peace.
