A Day in Middle Caicos

After picking up your car from the ferry dock in North Caicos, head for the causeway to Middle Caicos. As a general guideline, the trip from the ferry to Bambarra Beach can take up to 60 minutes, with only a brief stop along the way. Once you're over the causeway, it's fairly straightforward; there is only one main road the length of Middle Caicos. You'll see the blue roofs of Blue Horizon Resort on the hilltops almost immediately on your left. Either turn in for the pleasure of visiting Mudjin Harbour and an amazing restaurant or bypass the entrance to save it for later and watch for the Indian Cave sign on your left for your brief visit there. It is a lovely photographic location, with vines climbing up through sinkhole entries. Continue along the highway until you come to the sharp turn to the left into Conch Bar. If you go straight, you find yourself on the road to the Conch Bar Caves. If you forgot to make arrangements, you can try stopping in to see if there are any guides present to make a viewing. Again, this cave system is well worth the visit. Conch Bar is a small settlement with a couple of turns, but all roads eventually lead back to the main highway. Be sure to stop in at Daniel’s Café and the Middle Caicos Co-Op. Just past the deck of the restaurant you'll find a much less traveled road. This is passable by car, and makes for a lovely, slow drive along the coastline. Not far after that "trail" winds its way to meet the road, there will be a wide sweep in the otherwise straight road. Keep your eyes open for the knee-high "Bambarra Beach" sign just after the bend. The beach has several tiki huts built for community gatherings, as well as very tall coastal trees that offer shade. At low tide you can walk out to a small cay for something to do. Follow the sandy laneway until you see the beach ahead. Bring bug spray and refreshments; there are no shops nearby. Back to the main hard-topped road, farther along is the wee settlement of Bambarra; if you blink, you’ll miss it. Continue along and visit Lorimers; try to pick out the home on the left with fishing buoys and other paraphernalia hanging in the trees. The turn just before Lorimers takes you out to Haulover Plantation, Haulover Beach, and Wild Cow Run. It’s a very, very full day if you plan to take it all in, and don’t forget how long it takes to make it back to the ferry terminal!
