Car Travel

Don't rent a car if you're staying in Port of Spain, but if you're planning to tour Trinidad, you'll need some wheels, as you will if you end up staying out on the island. In Tobago you're better off renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle than relying on expensive taxi service. On either island, driving is on the left, British-style. Be aware that Tobago has very few gas stations—the main ones are in Crown Point and Scarborough. Be cautious driving on either island, because despite the introduction of the Breathalyzer, many people still take their chances driving after drinking, and erratic driving is the norm rather than the exception.
