Hiking

Eco-consciousness is strong on Tobago, where the rain forests of the Main Ridge were set aside for protection in 1764, creating the first such preserve in the Western Hemisphere. Natural areas include Little Tobago and St. Giles islands, both major seabird sanctuaries. In addition, the endangered leatherback turtles maintain breeding grounds on some of Tobago's leeward beaches.

Harris Jungle Tours. The knowledgeable Harris McDonald offers tours that range from strenuous to laid-back. The more adventurous might want to try the rain-forest-at-night tour, which promises the possibility of encounters with some of Tobago's folklore characters, including La Diablesse (a beautifully dressed she-devil with one cow's foot). Golden Grove Rd., Canaan, Tobago. 868/304--1840; www.harris-jungle-tours.com.

Yes Tourism. Among the many tours from this company is an excellent guided hike through the rain forest—the off-road jeep safari is hair-raising but memorable.
