Drug-related violent crimes have recently increased on Vieques. Tourists are largely unaffected, but it pays to be on your guard. Avoid bringing valuables to the beach, and don't leave any personal items in your car. Rental agencies advise that you leave your car unlocked when parked at a beach so thieves won't break the windows to get inside. There's very little crime on Culebra, but again, don't leave valuables in your car.
