Fodor's Expert Review Perla
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
This shell-shape restaurant is an architectural wonder, one of the most striking buildings in San Juan. Illuminated by artichoke lamps made from Murano glass, the dining room makes you feel as if you've entered a luxurious ocean liner. The kitchen is headed by Chef Lindell Smith, son of Dayn Smith, the restaurant's founder. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Lindell worked under top chef José Andres at Zaytinya in Washington, D.C. The cuisine at Perla is modern American, with a strong focus on seafood. The grilled prawns in a coconut-curry sauce are the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. Splurge on the baked lobster tail with lobster beurre blanc, grilled Swiss chard, and truffled mashed potatoes—a wonderful dish! Save room for dessert—the coconut cream cheese custard is the perfect way to end the evening.
